Às vezes, porém, filmes individuais se transformam em franquias devido a um personagem principal atraente ou uma trama que ressoa com o público - como foi o caso de propriedades tão diversas como Home Alone, Procurando Nemo e O Exorcista.

Para compilar uma lista das franquias de filmes mais valiosas de todos os tempos nos Estados Unidos, o 24/7 Tempo revisou as estatísticas do The Numbers, um banco de dados de filmes on-line de propriedade da Nash Information Services. As franquias são classificadas de acordo com o total de ingressos vendidos no mercado interno, ajustados pela inflação.

As franquias de animação da Disney ocupam nove lugares em nossa lista, e os filmes originais nos quais se baseiam são alguns dos primeiros. Estes incluem "Bambi" (1942), "Peter Pan" (1953), "A Dama e o Vagabundo" (1955) e "101 Dálmatas" (1961). Caso você esteja se perguntando, porém, a franquia em nossa lista cuja origem remonta mais longe é King Kong, que cresceu a partir do clássico filme lançado em 1933.

Dois atores provaram ser estrelas lucrativas em mais de uma das maiores franquias. Harrison Ford foi o herói fanfarrão dos primeiros filmes de Star Wars e desempenhou o papel principal nos filmes de Indiana Jones.
